We present a new method to study light scattering on nonabsorbing spherical particles. This method is based on the Ramsauer approach, a model known in atomic and nuclear physics. Its main advantage is its intuitive understanding of the underlying physics phenomena. We show that although the approximations are numerous, the Ramsauer analytical solutions describe fairly well the scattering phase function and the total cross section. Then this model is applied to the Henyey-Greenstein…

A modified Rayleigh-Gans-Debye formula for small angle X-ray scattering by interstellar dust grains

A widely used approximation in studies relating to small angle differential scattering cross-section of X-rays scattered by interstellar dust grains is the well known Rayleigh-Gans-Debye

A Monte Carlo simulation for the scattering of light in the case of an isotropic light source shows that, although aerosols are usually in lower density than molecules in the atmosphere, they can have a non-negligible effect on the atmospheric point spread function.

A review of approximate analytic light-scattering phase functions

Consider a plane light wave of wavelength λ incident on an obstacle of characteristic size a and complex relative refractive index m.

Systematic effects in the measurement of vertical aerosol profiles at the Pierre Auger Observatory

The Pierre Auger Observatory, located on the high plains of western Argentina, is the result of an international effort to measure the properties of the highest energy cosmic rays with an

Henyey-Greenstein and Mie phase functions in Monte Carlo radiative transfer computations.

It is shown here for the first time that simple semiclassical calculations provide a clear, simple, intuitively appealing description of the underlying scattering processes of Ramsauer-Townsend minima.

Particle sizing with a fast polar nephelometer.

Good correlation is achieved between experimental and theoretical data, proving the functioning of the polar nephelometer as a fast and convenient particle sizer.

Light Scattering from Small Particles

In the laser Doppler and phase Doppler techniques a part of the incident laser light is imaged by the particles onto the detectors. It is this scattered light which carries information about the

Light-scattering properties of plate and column ice crystals generated in a laboratory cold chamber.

With the measured ice crystal shape and size distribution, the angular scattering patterns computed from geometrical optics with a significant contribution by rough surfaces closely match those observed from the nephelometer.

Positrons — an alternative probe to electron scattering

Abstract. Interaction of positrons with atoms and molecules differs from electron interaction due to the difference in polarity of the charge. This makes positrons an alternative tool to study

Neutron Giant Resonances-Nuclear Ramsauer Effect

Three continuous families of broad maxima and minima are observed in neutron total cross sections between 0.1 and 100 Mev. All shift smoothly to higher energy with increasing mass number. The
