  • INTRODUCTION The emergence of resistant path ogens, along with a lack of novel anti microbial agents in the pharmaceutical pipeline, is becoming a growing problem in treating nosocomial infections. Among hospitalized patients, Clostridium dif ficule–associated disease (CDAD) is the leading cause of infectious diarrhea, with more than 400,000 cases reported per year in the U.S. The incidence of CDAD is estimated to be 3.4 to 8.4 cases per 1,000 hospital admissions.
