The East African lakes have exhibited dramaticfluctuations on both historical and paleo-climatictime scales. Levels of these lakes, and otherhistorical indicators in Africa, suggested thatenvironmental conditions in the nineteenth centurywere much more extreme than anything evident in themodern record. In this study, a water balance modelis used to estimate the rainfall associated with theseconditions, based on the Lake Victoria record. Theresults suggest that the conditions were not… Expand
Solar variability and the levels of Lake Victoria, East Africa, during the last millenium
A new diatom series with 1–6 year resolution from Lake Victoria, East Africa, shows that lake level minima occurred ca. 820–760, 680–660, 640–620, 370–340, and 220–150 calendar years BP. InferredExpand
Abrupt changes in the water balance of tropical West Africa during the late Quaternary
[1] Understanding the causes of tropical climate variability requires an understanding of not only the temporal patterns of these changes, but their spatial extent and magnitude. In this study, weExpand
Paleoenvironmental Changes in the Lake Baringo Basin, Kenya, East Africa Since AD 1650: Evidence from the Paleorecord
This article presents some of the findings of a multi-indicator investigation of the history of vegetational changes and land degradation in the Lake Baringo basin, Kenya, East Africa, during theExpand
A Multi-Century History of Drought and Wetter Conditions in Africa
This chapter reviews historical evidence of drought and wet conditions for regions of Africa. Africa contains the world’s largest expanse of arid and semi-arid land. Its people have contended withExpand
Expressions of climate perturbations in western Ugandan crater lake sediment records during the last 1000 years
Abstract. Equatorial East Africa has a complex regional patchwork of climate regimes, sensitive to climate fluctuations over a variety of temporal and spatial scales during the late Holocene.Expand
Climatic and environmental change in Africa during the last two centuries
Climatic and environmental changes in Africa during the last 2 centuries have been examined, using both systematic rainfall records and proxy information concerning lakes and rivers and theExpand
Expressions of cl mate perturbations in western Ugandan crater lake sedime t records during the last 1000 yr
Equatorial East Africa has a complex, regional patchwork of climate regimes, with multiple interacting drivers. Recent studies have focussed on large lakes and reveal signals that are smoothed inExpand
Climatic information of Western Sahel (1535–1793 AD) in original documentary sources
Abstract. The Sahel is the semi-arid transition zone between arid Sahara and humid tropical Africa, extending approximately 10–20° N from Mauritania in the West to Sudan in the East. The AfricanExpand
Vegetation history in western Uganda during the last 1200 years: a sedimentbased reconstruction from two crater lakes
Pollen, plant macrofossil and charcoal records from two neighbouring crater lakes (Lake Wandakara and Lake Kasenda) in lower montane (altitude-1200m) western Uganda (0.5DN, 30) reveal major changesExpand
Mapping changing shorelines in the Malombe and Chiuta lakes of Malawi—environmental effects of recent climatic variations
Abstract This study examines patterns of climate variability by mapping shoreline changes between 1973 and 2008 for two shallow lakes in Malawi, East Africa. Multi-temporal LANDSAT data coveringExpand
