Abstract Calculation of the spin-forbidden transition matrix elements of molecules through the first order of the badness of the molecular wavefunction is investigated by applying double perturbation theory and the exchange theorem for off-diagonal matrix elements. This method is applied to the calculation of the radiative lifetime of the singlet oxygen molecule.
