The nuclear arsenal and the use of nuclear technologies have enhanced the likelihood of whole‐body/partial‐body radiation exposure. The central nervous system is highly susceptible to even low doses of radiation. With the aim of detecting and monitoring the pathologic changes of radiation‐induced damage in brain parenchyma, we used serial diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTI) with a 7T magnetic resonance unit and neurobehavioral assessments mice irradiated with 3‐, 5‐, and 8‐Gy…
Early detection of whole body radiation induced microstructural and neuroinflammatory changes in hippocampus: A diffusion tensor imaging and gene expression study
TLDR
The study showed that there was an influence of whole body radiation exposure on hippocampus even during the early acute phase that could be reflected in terms of neuroinflammatory response as well as microstructural changes.
Comparative evaluation of brain neurometabolites and DTI indices following whole body and cranial irradiation: a magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy study
TLDR
In animals exposed to whole body radiation, FA was significantly decreased in some additional brain regions such as sensory motor cortex and corpus callosum in comparison with cranial irradiation groups and controls, suggesting radiation induced reactive astrogliosis or neuroinflammatory response.
Dose-dependent degeneration of non-cancerous brain tissue in post-radiotherapy patients: A diffusion tensor imaging study
TLDR
White matter is susceptible to radiation with some regional variability where diffusivity metrics demonstrate the largest relative sensitivity, suggesting that dMRI is a promising tool in assessing microstructural changes after RT, which can help in understanding treatment-induced cognitive decline.
Evaluation of Disease Stage of Radiation-Induced Brain Injury: a DTI Study with Pathological Correlation
TLDR
DTI can distinguish the different disease stages when combined with the ADC and FA values, and pathological evaluation showed the different features in three stages.
Longitudinal changes in gray matter regions after cranial radiation and comparative analysis with whole body radiation: a DTI study
TLDR
The differential response after whole body and cranial irradiation observed in the study depicts that radiation exposure of 5 Gy could induce permanent alterations in gray matter regions prominently as observed in Caudoputamen region at all the time points.
Noninvasive Assessment of Neurodevelopmental Disorders after In Utero Irradiation in Mice: An In Vivo Anatomical and Diffusion MRI Study
TLDR
Combining anatomical and diffusion MRI is a promising approach to noninvasively investigate the radiosensitivity of local brain areas in adult mice after in utero irradiation in terms of microstructure.
Early Differential Neurometabolite Response of Hippocampus on Exposure to Graded dose of Whole Body Radiation: An in Vivo 1H MR Spectroscopy Study
TLDR
Overall the findings suggest differential change in hippocampal volume regulatory mechanism associated neuro-metabolites following whole body radiation exposure with maximum reduction in case of high dose group.
Altered brain metabolism after whole body irradiation in mice: A preliminary in vivo 1H MRS study
TLDR
The results of this preliminary study suggest that the alteration/reduction in the mI and Tau concentration may be associated with physiological perturbations in astrocytes or radiation induced neuro-inflammatory response triggered in microglial cell.
