Rack Force Estimation for Driving on Uneven Roads

title={Rack Force Estimation for Driving on Uneven Roads},
author={Akshay Bhardwaj and Daniel Slavin and John Walsh and James S. Freudenberg and Richard Brent Gillespie},
The force transmitted from the tires and tie rods to the steering rack of a vehicle, called the rack force, significantly influences the torque experienced by a driver at the steering wheel. As a result, estimates of rack force are used in a wide variety of advanced driver assist systems. However, existing methods for producing rack force estimates are either susceptible to the steering system disturbances or are only applicable to driving on flat road profiles. To overcome these limitations…

Estimating Rack Force due to Road Slopes for Electric Power Steering Systems
This paper develops two real-time capable models to estimate the rack force for driving on longitudinal and lateral road slopes using vehicle and tire dynamics models and compares them with a model existing in the literature that does not account for road slopes.
Rack force feedback for an electrical power steering simulator
This paper presents a force feedback control approach to enhance the realism and the fidelity of an electric power steering simulator. This simulator includes a real steering system with its electric
The In-Plane Dynamics of Tyres on Uneven Roads
SUMMARY The excitation of the tyre by short wavelength road unevennesses (e.g. cleats) is very complex. The tyre, which acts as a geometric filter due to its finite dimensions, smoothens the sharp
A Semi-Empirical Three-Dimensional Model of the Pneumatic Tyre Rolling over Arbitrarily Uneven Road Surfaces
Nowadays virtual prototyping tools play an important part in the development of vehicles. For studying the dynamics of a vehicle, complex vehicle models are required that are composed of several
Control of Electric Power Steering Systems - from State of Art to Future Challenges
The paper summarizes the essential functional requirements for state of the art steering systems and gives an overview of control concepts as implemented in typical EPS systems today and outlines challenges for future approaches from an industrial point of view.
