Both in vivo models of ischemia/reperfusion and in vitro models of hypoxia (H)/reoxygenation (R) have demonstrated the crucial role of the Rac1-regulated NADPH oxidase in the production of injurious reactive oxygen species (ROS) by vascular endothelial cells (ECs).
