We report the discovery of RX J0529.8-6556, a new transient X-ray source in the direction of the Large Magellanic Cloud. From 32 pointed ROSAT observations distributed over 3.5 years one single outburst with 0.25 cts s−1 was detected while from most observations only upper limits could be derived. During the outburst periodic modulation of the X-ray flux with a period of 69.5 s is seen.
