There are two key areas related to user interfaces: Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Adaptation. Adaptation builds user interfaces adapted to user characteristics and preferences, but it does not take into account the basic principles associated with human interaction. HCI, takes into account said principles, but does not address the varying preferences and user characteristics.
