Protein-coding genes are transcribed by RNA polymerise (pol) II in all eukaryotes analyzed to date, with the exception of the protozoan Trypanosoma brucei, where pol I can mediate expression of chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT) and neomycin phosphotransferase (neo) reporter genes.
