Hepatic encephalopathy is a neuropsychiatric manifestation of acute and chronic liver failure. Ammonia plays a key role in the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy by inducing astrocyte swelling and/or sensitizing astrocytes to swelling by a heterogeneous panel of precipitating factors and conditions.
