Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) and transcatheter arterial chemoembolization are widely used palliative treatments for patients with nonsurgical hepatocellular carcinoma. TAE has been shown to increase levels of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) in tumors.
