National case-control study of Kaposi's sarcoma and Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in homosexual men: Part 1. Epidemiologic results.
- MedicineAnnals of internal medicine
- 1983
Certain aspects of a lifestyle shared by a subgroup of the male homosexual population are associated with an increased risk of Kaposi's sarcoma and pneumocystis pneumonia.
Kaposi's sarcoma in homosexual men. A seroepidemiologic case-control study.
- Medicine, BiologyAnnals of internal medicine
- 1984
Logistic regression analysis comparing patients with controls showed significant relative risks for Kaposi's sarcoma associated with the number of partners per month in receptive anal-genital intercourse, occasions per month of " fisting ," and cytomegalovirus antibody titers.
Generalized lymphadenopathy in homosexual men.
- MedicineAnnals of internal medicine
- 1983
It is suggested that generalized lymphadenopathy is part of the spectrum of a disorder manifested by acquired immunodeficiency, opportunistic infections, Kaposi's sarcoma, and malignant lymphomas.
Kaposi's sarcoma and malignant lymphoma in AIDS
- MedicineVirchows Archiv A
- 2004
A 48-year-old homosexual with contacts in different countries, including Haiti, presented with multiple pigmented or bluish nodules on both lower legs and upper arms and Autopsy revealed a Kaposi's sarcoma of the skin with metastases in the stomach and a wide-spread malignant lymphoma in the gastrointestinal tract, in several visceral organs and in many lymph nodes.

Findings suggest that nitrate inhalants may act alone or in combination with other as yet unidentified cofactors after AIDS retrovirus-induced immunodeficiency by promoting the specific disease manifestation of Kaposis sarcoma.

The distribution and transmission of AIDS parallels hepatitis B virus infection which is transmitted sexually and parenterally, and the same precautions as for hepatitis B should be taken for AIDS.
Kaposi's sarcoma: aetiopathogenesis, histology and clinical features
- MedicineJournal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology : JEADV
- 2003
The identification of the aetiopathogenetic mechanisms (viral agents and immunodeficiency) involved in the pathogenesis of KS, are relevant for identifying susceptible subjects (HHV‐8 seropositive subjects), monitoring the immune levels in iatrogenic immune suppressed patients, and developing new therapeutic approaches based on antiviral and immune modulators.
Possible correlation between exposure to aids risk factors, clinical presentation in aids, and subsequent prognosis
- MedicineEuropean Journal of Epidemiology
- 2004
This study found that cases with opportunistic infections - that is, with a poor prognosis — had been exposed to AIDS-related risk factors at higher levels than cases with Kaposi's sarcoma alone, suggesting that the prognosis of AIDS could be associated with the level of exposure to AIDS risk factors or cofactors.
Low T-lymphocyte ratios in homosexual men. Epidemiologic evidence for a transmissible agent.
- Medicine, PsychologyJAMA
- 1984
The hypothesis that a transmissible biologic agent may be etiologically responsible for the low helper/suppressor ratios in homosexual men is supported.

Severe acquired immunodeficiency in male homosexuals, manifested by chronic perianal ulcerative herpes simplex lesions.
- Medicine, BiologyThe New England journal of medicine
- 1981
Four homosexual men presented with gradually enlarging perianal ulcers, from which herpes simplex virus was cultured, and were found to have depressed cell-mediated immunity, as evidenced by skin anergy, lymphopenia, and poor or absent responses to plant lectins and antigens in vitro.
High Rates of Enteric Protozoal Infections in Selected Homosexual Men Attending a Venereal Disease Clinic
- Medicine, BiologySexually transmitted diseases

The exceptionally high rate of prevalence of intestinal protozoal infection in this population of high-risk, sexually active homosexual men suggests that enteric protozoa infections arc important among sexually transmitted diseases.

CMV‐related antigens, mainly localized in the nucleus, were found in cryostat sections of seven of 31 tumor biopsies and four of 12 KS cell lines at early passage level, indicating that the antigen is present in a high number of tumor cells, like the Epstein‐Barr virus nuclear antigen in EBV‐transformed cells.
