A revision of the hydrophilid subfamily Helophorinae (Coleoptera), containing the single genus Helophorus Fabricius 1775, is presented, including an historical review, a discussion of diagnostic characters and techniques, and an attempt at a phylogenetic reconstruction of the major lineages of the Nearctic Helophorus .Forty-one species are recognized; 9 species and 1 subspecies are described as new. Atractohelophorus Kuweit 1886 is placed in synonymy with Rhopalelophorus Kuwert 1886, and…

Phylogeny and the fossil record of the Helophoridae reveal Jurassic origin of extant hydrophiloid lineages (Coleoptera: Polyphaga)

This analysis provides additional evidence for the monophyly of the helophorid lineage containing the families Helophoridae, Georissidae and Epimetopidae, as well as the first hypothesis on the phylogenetic relationships within Helophorus, revealing three main clades.

The family Epimetopidae (Coleoptera: Hydrophiloidea): review of current knowledge, genus-level phylogeny, and taxonomic revision of Eupotemus

The morphological data and sequences of four genes are used to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships among genera and reveal Eumetopus as the earliest diverging taxon and Epimetopus + Eupotemus as a strongly supported clade with numerous synapomorphies.

A new species of Helophorus Fabricius, 1775 from the Chinese Altai, with notes on the former subgenus Atractohelophorus Kuwert, 1886 and selected species (Coleoptera: Hydrophilidae)

A single female is described from a single female taken among gravel at the edge of the Kran river in the Chinese Altai and postglacial fossils representing about seven specimens are described.

Triploidy in Chinese parthenogenetic Helophorus orientalis Motschulsky, 1860, further data on parthenogenetic H. brevipalpis Bedel, 1881 and a brief discussion of parthenogenesis in Hydrophiloidea (Coleoptera)

It appears to be rare and, in all cases, has been detected by chromosomal analysis of populations in which males are unexpectedly scarce, and is suspected in Helophorus aquila Angus et al., 2014, from northern Qinghai (China, which should be verified in further studies.

BOOK REVIEW: Hansen M.: Hydrophiloidea (s.str.) (Coleoptera). In: World Catalogue of Insects 2.

This volume is devoted to the superfamily Hydrophiloidea, which is under stood in a strict sense, i.e., consisting of the families Helophoridae, Epimetopidae, Georissidae, Hydrochidae, Spercheidae and Hydrophilidae, and follows all recent taxonomic revisions except that for the genus Helophorus.

The aquatic Coleoptera of Prince Edward Island, Canada: new records and faunal composition

Th e aquatic Coleoptera (Gyrinidae, Haliplidae, Dytiscidae, Hydrophilidae, Elmidae, Dryopidae, Heteroceridae) of Prince Edward Island, Canada is surveyed. Seventy-two species are now known to occur

A faunistic study on aquatic Coleoptera (Helophoridae: Hydrophilidae) species in Elazığ Province, Turkey.

All species of Helophoridae and Hydrophilidae (except Berosus spinosus (Steven, 1808)) were new records for the Coleoptera fauna of Elazig.

New records of Helophoridae, Hydrochidae, and Hydrophilidae (Coleoptera) from New Brunswick, Canada

Abstract The following three species of Helophoridae are newly recorded for New Brunswick, Canada: Helophorus (Kyphohelophorus) turberculatus Gyllenhal, Helophorus (Rhopaleloporus) oblongus LeConte,

A New Species of Helophorus Fabricius, 1775 (Coleoptera: Helophoridae) from Turkey, with a Remark to the Key to Subgenera in Angus (1992)

A new species of hydrophiloid beetles, Helophorus (Orphelophorus) turca sp.

Distribution of Turkish Helophorus Fabricius, 1775 (Coleoptera, Helophoridae) II. Subgenus Atracthelophorus, with Two New Records and Some Ecological Notes

Two newly recorded Helophorus Fabricius species/subspecies for the Turkish fauna are compared against Turkish specimens (private collection) and a list of subgenus Atracthelophorus species known from Turkey and their distribution in Turkey and worldwide is presented.

Evolution of the subgenus Cyphelophorus (Genus Helophorus, Hydrophilidae, Coleoptera): description of two new fossil species and discussion of Helophorus tuberculatus Gyll.

Exposures of late Tertiary sediments in the North American Arctic contain well-preserved fossils of Coleoptera (beetles) and have yielded fragments referable to two fossil species of the helophoran subgenus Cyphelophorus (Hydrophilidae), which probably represent sequential species in the lineage leading to H. tuberculatus.

HELOPHORUS ORIENTALIS (COLEOPTERA: HYDROPHILIDAE), A PARTHENOGENETIC WATER BEETLE FROM SIBERIA AND NORTH AMERICA, AND A BRITISH PLEISTOCENE FOSSIL

Helophorus orientalis is shown by laboratory breeding to be parthenogenetic, and in the other species no maleless populations are known, and although there is no proof that they cannot breed without males, this is considered very unlikely.

Pleistocene Helophorus (Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae) from Borislav and Starunia in the Western Ukraine, with a Reinterpretation of M. Lomnicki's Species, Description of a New Siberian Species, and Comparison with British Weichselian Faunas

The five Helophorus species described by Łomnicki (1894) from fossils in oil-impregnated Pleistocene silts at Borislav, near Lvov, are redescribed and indentified as modern species. Four of

Separation of two species standing as Helophorus aquaticus (L.) (Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae) by banded chromosome analysis

It is shown that these species differ because of reciprocal translocations between some chromosomes, and that they would therefore be unable to produce fertile hybrids.

Evolution and Classification of Beetles

The beetle ovipositor represents the plesiomorphic form of that found in neuropteroids, so Coleoptera could not be the sister group of any particular neuropteroid order; but Hamilton (48) argued on the basis of wing venation thatColeoptera and Megaloptera are sister groups.

Separation of Helophorus grandis, maritimus and occidentalis sp.n. (Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae) by banded chromosome analysis

Examination of the chromosomes shows that Helophorus grandis Ill. is a species quite separate from H.maritimus Rey and H.occidentalis sp.n.

British Water Beetles

AQUATIC Coleoptera have long been favourite objects of study, especially by the biologist and the physiologist. Dytiscus, Gyrinus and Hydrophilus, for example, have alone attracted the attention of

Evolutionary stability since the Pleistocene illustrated by reproductive compatibility between Swedish and Spanish Helophorus lapponicus Thomson (Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae)

The level of compatibility of these populations is similar to that found when different populations of Lepidoptera species are crossed, and quite different from the incompatibility revealed by studies of interspecific hybridization.
