Abstract The reproductive cycle and recruitment period of a ghost crab population from Ubatuba, São Paulo, Brazil were investigated by means of examining the developmental stages of gonads of breeding crabs and the ingress of young recruits to the studied population. Monthly collections over a one-year period were carried out during nocturnal low-tide periods at “Vermelha” beach. The morphology of the abdomen and pleopods was used for sex determination. All captured crabs were measured for…

Population biology of the burrowing crab Neohelice granulata, (Crustacea: Decapoda: Varunidae) from a tropical mangrove in Brazil

Comparative studies including other habitats, such as mangrove forests, are needed to further understand the environmental influences on the population and reproductive biology of semiterrestrial crabs.

Population biology of Uca mordax (Smith, 1870) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Ocypodidae) from the southeastern coast of Brazil

The population biology of the fiddler crab Uca mordax was similar to that of mostbroad-front fi ddler crab species, and females predominated in the fi rst size classes.

Reproductive biology of the ghost crab, Ocypode rotundata Miers, 1882 (Decapoda, Ocypodidae) at Qeshm Island, Persian Gulf

It is concluded that reproduction in O. rotundata is seasonal, and that spawning occurs in an appropriate period to ensure maximum survival of the offspring, with GSI variations being related to temperature.

Breeding Season and Molt Cycle of the Fiddler Crab Uca rapax (Brachyura, Ocypodidae) in a Subtropical Estuary, Brazil, South America

This is the first account of the breeding season and molt cycle of Uca rapax on the Brazilian coast during a one-year period (April2001-March 2002), when crabs with developed gonads were found mostly in warmer seasons.

Fecundity and sexual maturity of the crab Macrophthalmus depressus (Brachyura: Ocypodidae) from Inhaca Island, Mozambique

A very low variation in number of eggs was observed within the same size class, probably indicating synchronous spawning within thesame reproductive season and the potential effects of variations in fecundity in this species and in the Ocypodidae family were compared and discussed.

Physiologic sexual maturity of the fiddler crab Uca rapax (Smith, 1870) (Crustacea, Ocypodidae) from two mangroves in Ubatuba, Brazil

The gonad development of Uca rapax was studied to achieve the size at onset of its sexual maturity, probably due to a major investment in their somatic growth, while females saved energy in the reproductive process, saving energy for eggs’ production.

Population structure and reproductive biology of the fiddler crab Uca urvillei (Brachyura: Ocypodidae) in Maputo Bay (south Mozambique)

Both gonadosomatic index and frequency of ovigerous females showed that Uca urvillei breeds continuously with peaks in summer and a strong decrease in winter, and the population is characterized by normal size distributions, which are slightly skewed to the left.

Population and reproductive biology of the crab Uca burgersi(Crustacea: Ocypodidae) in three subtropical mangrove forests

The synchrony between the populational and reproductive biology in the three areas showed that local features were not the limiting factors, and it is suggested that this species is a habitat generalist.

Vertical distribution by demographic groups of ghost crab Ocypode quadrata (Crustacea: Brachyura)

The vertical distribution of the ghost crabs differed among age groups: males mostly occupied the middle and upper levels; adult females were more abundant in the lower level; and juveniles were evenly distributed in all levels, with a slight tendency toward the middle.

The relative growth and sexual maturity of the freshwater crab Dilocarcinus pagei (Brachyura, Trichodactylidae) in the northwestern region of the state of São Paulo

The size at sexual maturity in the freshwater crab Dilocarcinus pagei Stimpson, 1861, from a population located in Mendonca, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil is determined and a minimum size is estimated that allows at least half of the population to reproduce and retains the juveniles and a portion of the adults in the population.

The reproductive cycle of this species was studied based on their moult cycle and the development of their gonads, evidenced by the presence of ovigerous females with ovaries in all the development phases.

Nitrogen Limitation in the Herbivorous Land Crab Cardisoma guanhumi

Although crabs were selective about the plants eaten in their habitat, the choice was not correlated with nitrogen content in the plants and indicates the importance of allochemical defense to both plant survival and actual plant availability to the crabs.
