Abstract The reproductive cycle and recruitment period of a ghost crab population from Ubatuba, São Paulo, Brazil were investigated by means of examining the developmental stages of gonads of breeding crabs and the ingress of young recruits to the studied population. Monthly collections over a one-year period were carried out during nocturnal low-tide periods at “Vermelha” beach. The morphology of the abdomen and pleopods was used for sex determination. All captured crabs were measured for… Expand
Population biology of the burrowing crab Neohelice granulata, (Crustacea: Decapoda: Varunidae) from a tropical mangrove in Brazil
TLDR
Comparative studies including other habitats, such as mangrove forests, are needed to further understand the environmental influences on the population and reproductive biology of semiterrestrial crabs. Expand
Population biology of Uca mordax (Smith, 1870) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Ocypodidae) from the southeastern coast of Brazil
TLDR
The population biology of the fiddler crab Uca mordax was similar to that of mostbroad-front fi ddler crab species, and females predominated in the fi rst size classes. Expand
Reproductive biology of the ghost crab, Ocypode rotundata Miers, 1882 (Decapoda, Ocypodidae) at Qeshm Island, Persian Gulf
TLDR
It is concluded that reproduction in O. rotundata is seasonal, and that spawning occurs in an appropriate period to ensure maximum survival of the offspring, with GSI variations being related to temperature. Expand
Breeding Season and Molt Cycle of the Fiddler Crab Uca rapax (Brachyura, Ocypodidae) in a Subtropical Estuary, Brazil, South America
TLDR
This is the first account of the breeding season and molt cycle of Uca rapax on the Brazilian coast during a one-year period (April2001-March 2002), when crabs with developed gonads were found mostly in warmer seasons. Expand
Fecundity and sexual maturity of the crab Macrophthalmus depressus (Brachyura: Ocypodidae) from Inhaca Island, Mozambique
TLDR
A very low variation in number of eggs was observed within the same size class, probably indicating synchronous spawning within thesame reproductive season and the potential effects of variations in fecundity in this species and in the Ocypodidae family were compared and discussed. Expand
Population Biology and Breeding Period of the Sand-Bubbler Crab Dotilla Fenestrata (Brachyura: Ocypodidae) from Southern Mozambique
TLDR
Observations and the maximum size attained by adults supports the hypothesis that for this burrowing crab, recruitment may occur in different habitat than that occupied by adults, since the analysed population attains sexual maturity in smaller sizes than that from close areas. Expand
Physiologic sexual maturity of the fiddler crab Uca rapax (Smith, 1870) (Crustacea, Ocypodidae) from two mangroves in Ubatuba, Brazil
TLDR
The gonad development of Uca rapax was studied to achieve the size at onset of its sexual maturity, probably due to a major investment in their somatic growth, while females saved energy in the reproductive process, saving energy for eggs’ production. Expand
Population structure and reproductive biology of the fiddler crab Uca urvillei (Brachyura: Ocypodidae) in Maputo Bay (south Mozambique)
Although fiddler crabs are among the main faunal components in mangrove habitats, few studies have described the population structure and reproduction of tropical species. Such information isExpand
Population and reproductive biology of the crab Uca burgersi(Crustacea: Ocypodidae) in three subtropical mangrove forests
TLDR
The synchrony between the populational and reproductive biology in the three areas showed that local features were not the limiting factors, and it is suggested that this species is a habitat generalist. Expand
Vertical distribution by demographic groups of ghost crab Ocypode quadrata (Crustacea: Brachyura)
TLDR
The vertical distribution of the ghost crabs differed among age groups: males mostly occupied the middle and upper levels; adult females were more abundant in the lower level; and juveniles were evenly distributed in all levels, with a slight tendency toward the middle. Expand
