Appropriate gate allocation to shorten walking distances for passengers at airport terminals is proposed, with the emphasis on making the most effective use of existing facilities. An analysis of gate allocation procedures at a terminal of the Toronto, Canada International Airport over a period of several years was performed; various categories of passenger flow, such as arriving, departing, domestic, foreign and transferring were studied.
