Direct volume rendering (DVR) acceleration has recently become available for the personal computer. Current approaches achieve 10-35 Hz frame-rates when visualizing 256 datasets. These designs either maximize sample throughput, object-order architectures, or they minimize the number of samples required to render the dataset, image-order architectures.
