Expand

The regulation of plant and animal species and communities in African shallow lakes and wetlands
Le continent africain est riche en lacs plats et zones humides. En fonction de leur latitude, altitude, et position geographique au sein d'un bassin majeur ou craton, ils sont influences par unExpand

A comparative allometric study of the morphometry of the gills of an alkalinity adapted cichlid fish,Oreochromis alcalicus grahami, of Lake Magadi, Kenya
TLDR
In no other extant fish have the gills had to be so exquisitely designed to meet environmental extremes and regulate complex and at times conflicting functions such as gas exchange, iono-regulation, acid-base balance and nitrogenous waste excretion as in O. a. Expand

Effect of ecological variables on the population dynamics of sympatric notobranchiid fishes
TLDR
The relationship between 12 environmental variables and abundance of two sympatric notobranchiid fishes showed that E. bifasciatus was more abundant of the two species throughout the study period, and E. spilargyreius was fairly specific in its habitat preference, with a significant positive correlation to marshy habitat. Species succession and the development of a lacustrine fish community in an ephemeral lake.
TLDR
The temporal succession of fish species over an 8 year period from initial inundation 2007 to maturation in 2014 is described, indicating that the fish community in the ephemeral Lake Liambezi is clearly influenced by numerous factors including connectivity, lake level fluctuations, competition and the effects of fishing, which may disrupt typical succession processes in floodplain ecosystems. Influence of environmental variables on the relative abundance and habitat use of two sympatric notobranchiid fishes in a tropical stream
TLDR
The relationship between 12 environmental variables and abundance of two sympatric notobranchiid fishes showed that E. bifasciatus was more abundant of the two species throughout the study period, whilst E. spilargyreius was fairly specific in its habitat preference, and showed some flexibility in habitat-use. Fish assemblages of an African river floodplain: a test of alternative models of community structure
In the Oueme River, a lowland river in Benin, Africa, artificial ponds constructed in the floodplain (whedos) are colonised during the high-water period by a presumably random sample of fishes fromExpand

The respiratory metabolism of Tilapia mossambica (Teleostei)
TLDR
Reduction in osmotic load is suggested as the probable cause for a greater scope for activity and greater rate of oxygen consumption in 12.5‰ salinity in the teleost Tilapia mossambica (Peters). Expand
Some Considerations in the Study of Respiratory Metabolism in Fish, Particularly Salmon
A general review of the basis and measurement of respiratory metabolism in fish is presented, with particular reference to sources and magnitudes of influence (error) which various major factors canExpand
Oxygen consumption as a function of pH in three species of freshwater fishes
TLDR
The results suggest that the importance of anoxia as a factor contributing to the death of fishes at low pH may vary among species. Expand
Oxygen Consumption of Tilapia nilotica in Relation to Swimming Speed and Salinity
TLDR
Generally, oxygen consumption at 0, 7.5, and 22.5‰ was approximately equal; values at 11.6‰ were lowest and those at 30‰ highest; energy required for osmoregulation was least in the absence of an osmotic gradient and greatest when the osmosis gradient was highest. Expand
