The singlet oxygen quenching activities among common hydrophilic and lipophilic antioxidants such as polyphenols, tocopherols, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, coenzyme Q10 and α-lipoic acid were recorded under the same test condition: the chemiluminescence detection system for direct O2 counting using the thermodissociable endoperoxides of 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene as O2 generator in DMF : CDCl3 (9 : 1). Carotenoids exhibited larger total quenching rate constants than other antioxidants, with… Expand

Determination of singlet oxygen quenching rate and mechanism of γ-oryzanol
TLDR
It is suggested that γ-oryzanol can perform as a singlet oxygen quencher with slightly dominated by physical quenching mechanism (52.28%). Expand
Evaluation of antioxidant activity of carotenoid extract from shrimp processing byproducts by in vitro assays and in membrane model system
Abstract Carotenoid extracts from shrimp processing discards were evaluated for antioxidant activity. Crude extract and fractions rich in astaxanthin showed strong antioxidant activity as indicatedExpand
A Possible Role for Singlet Oxygen in the Degradation of Various Antioxidants. A Meta-Analysis and Review of Literature Data
TLDR
A competition between the various antioxidants and the proteins of proteinaceous diseases in capturing singlet oxygen’s empty π* orbital is suggested because the concentration of the antioxidants could be a crucial factor for the competition. Expand
In Vitro Antioxidant, Antityrosinase, and Cytotoxic Activities of Astaxanthin from Shrimp Waste
TLDR
The results suggested that shrimp astaxanthin would be a promising dietary supplement for skin health applications. Expand
Effects of Phosphatidylcholine on Interaction of α-Tocopherol and β-Carotene in Photosensitized Oxidation of Emulsions
The interaction between α-tocopherol (500 mg/kg) and β-carotene (10 mg/kg) during chlorophyll-photosensitized oxidation of a sunflower oil emulsion was studied in the presence or absence ofExpand
Inhibition of Singlet Oxidation in Some Edible Vegetable Oils by Plant Extracts.
The singlet oxidation inhibiting abilities of methanolic extracts of air-dried red pepper, onion and carrot were examined by measuring their effects on methylene blue sensitized photoxidationExpand
Reevaluation of analytical condition using highly singlet oxygen sensitive/selective reagent in aqueous-/non-aqueous solution
The spin-trapping ESR (ST-ESR) method, which observes unstable radicals as stable spin adducts using electron spin resonance (ESR), is an effective experimental method for evaluating chemicalExpand
Mitochondrion-Permeable Antioxidants to Treat ROS-Burst-Mediated Acute Diseases
TLDR
Astaxanthin (a special carotenoid) is proposed to be the best antioxidant for ROS-burst-mediated acute diseases, like avian influenza infection and ischemia-reperfusion, although astaxanthins are so unstable that most of them are inactivated after oral administration. Expand
Isolation of Fucoxanthin from Brown Algae and Its Antioxidant Activity: In Vitro and 5% Fish Oil-In-Water Emulsion
Oil-In-Water Emulsion DTU Orbit (28/04/2019) Isolation of Fucoxanthin from Brown Algae and Its Antioxidant Activity: In Vitro and 5% Fish Oil-In-Water Emulsion Fucoxanthin, a nonprovitamin AExpand
Effect of light exposure on the quality of extra virgin olive oils according to their chemical composition.
TLDR
EVOOs richer in oleuropein derivatives showed superior oxidative stability, which resulted in lower off-flavour volatile compound production and α-tocopherol and polyphenols losses, and thus, higher EVOO sensory and health benefits. Expand
