Quaternized modifications of chitosan present characteristics that might be useful in DNA condensing and efficient gene delivery. Trimethylated chitosan (TMO) was synthesized from oligomeric chitosan (<20 monomer units). TMOs spontaneously formed complexes (chitoplexes) with RSV-alpha3 luciferase plasmid DNA.
