Quantum reference frames and triality
@article{Smolin2020QuantumRF, title={Quantum reference frames and triality}, author={Lee Smolin}, journal={arXiv: High Energy Physics - Theory}, year={2020} }
In a background independent theory without boundary, physical observables may be defined with respect to dynamical reference systems. However, I argue here that there may be a symmetry that exchanges the degrees of freedom of the physical frame of reference with the other degrees of freedom which are measured relative to that frame. This symmetry expresses the fact that the choice of frame of reference is arbitrary, but the same laws apply to all, including observer and observed. It is then…

Previously we have shown that the algebra J3[C ⊗ O] ⊗ C (4,C), given by the tensor product of the complex exceptional Jordan J3[C⊗O] and the complex Clifford algebra C (4,C), can describe all of the…

Quantum mechanics and the covariance of physical laws in quantum reference frames
- PhysicsNature Communications
- 2019
A relational formalism is used to quantise a reference frame and the covariance of physical laws under transformations between such quantum reference frames is shown.

Given the importance of quantum reference systems to both quantum and gravitational physics, it is pertinent to develop a systematic method for switching between the descriptions of physics relative…

Despite its importance in general relativity, a quantum notion of general covariance has not yet been established in quantum gravity and cosmology, where, given the a priori absence of coordinates,…
Quantum theory from quantum gravity

We provide a mechanism by which, from a background-independent model with no quantum mechanics, quantum theory arises in the same limit in which spatial properties appear. Starting with an arbitrary…
A change of perspective: switching quantum reference frames via a perspective-neutral framework
- PhysicsQuantum
- 2020
A perspective-neutral structure is developed, which contains all frame perspectives at once and via which they are changed, and a new take on the relation between a `quantum general covariance' and the diffeomorphism symmetry in quantum gravity is suggested.

Relativistic Quantum Reference Frames: The Operational Meaning of Spin.

An operational procedure offers a concrete way of testing the relativistic features of the spin, and opens up the possibility of devising quantum information protocols for spin in the special-relativistic regime.
Time reference frames and gravitating quantum clocks
- Physics
- 2019
A framework for "time reference frames," in which events are defined in terms of quantum operations with respect to a quantum clock, is developed, which finds that, when clocks and quantum systems interact gravitationally, the temporal localisability of events becomes relative, depending on the time reference frame.
