We show that strongly coupled field theories with holographic gravity duals at finite charge density and low temperatures can undergo de Haas-van Alphen quantum oscillations as a function of an external magnetic field. Exhibiting this effect requires computation of the one-loop contribution of charged bulk fermions to the free energy. The one-loop calculation is performed using a formula expressing determinants in black hole backgrounds as sums over quasinormal modes. At zero temperature, the…

Holography, black holes and condensed matter physics

In this thesis we employ holographic techniques to explore strongly-coupled quantum field theories at non-zero temperature and density. First we consider a state dual to a charged black hole with

Holographic fermions in external magnetic fields

We study the Fermi level structure of 2+1-dimensional strongly interacting electron systems in external magnetic field using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The gravity dual of a finite density fermion

Holographic description of strongly correlated electrons in external magnetic fields

We study the Fermi level structure of 2+1-dimensional strongly interacting electron systems in external magnetic field using the AdS/CFT correspondence. The gravity dual of a finite density fermion

Holographically smeared Fermi surface: Quantum oscillations and Luttinger count in electron stars

We apply a small magnetic field to strongly interacting matter with a gravity dual description as an electron star. These systems are both metallic and quantum critical at low energies. The resulting

Particle-hole instability in the $AdS_4$ holography

We show that particle-hole pairing is realized in the background of a charged black hole in magnetic field. The pairing instability occurs for sufficiently large fermion charges, which correspond to

Fermions in an AdS3 Black Hole Background and the Gauge-Gravity Duality

We study a model whose dynamics is determined by a Maxwell Lagrangian coupled to a complex scalar and a Dirac fermion field, in an AdS3 black hole background. Our study is performed within the

Fractionalization of holographic Fermi surfaces

Zero temperature states of matter at finite charge density are holographically described by a spacetime with an asymptotic electric flux. This flux can be sourced either by explicit charged matter

Holographic dual of the lowest Landau level

We describe the lowest Landau level of a quantum electron star in AdS4. In the presence of a suitably strong magnetic field, the dynamics of fermions in the bulk is effectively reduced from four to

Landau levels, magnetic fields and holographic Fermi liquids

We consider further a probe fermion in a dyonic black hole background in anti-de Sitter spacetime, at zero temperature, comparing and contrasting two distinct classes of solution that have previously

The quasi-normal modes of quantum criticality

We study charge transport of quantum critical points described by conformal field theories in 2+1 spacetime dimensions. The transport is described by an effective field theory on an asymptotically

Holographic non-Fermi liquid in a background magnetic field

We study the effects of a nonzero magnetic field on a class of 2+1 dimensional non-Fermi liquids, recently found in [Hong Liu, John McGreevy, and David Vegh, arXiv:0903.2477.] by considering

Quasinormal modes of AdS black holes and the approach to thermal equilibrium

We investigate the decay of a scalar field outside a Schwarzschild anti de Sitter black hole. This is determined by computing the complex frequencies associated with quasinormal modes. There are

A holographic superconductor in an external magnetic field

We study a system of a complex charged scalar coupled to a Reissner-Nordstr?m black hole in 3+1 dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime, neglecting back-reaction. With suitable boundary conditions, the

Holographic aspects of Fermi liquids in a background magnetic field

We study the effects of an external magnetic field on the properties of the quasiparticle spectrum of the class of (2 + 1)-dimensional strongly coupled theories holographically dual to charged AdS4

Quasinormal modes of black holes and black branes

Quasinormal modes are eigenmodes of dissipative systems. Perturbations of classical gravitational backgrounds involving black holes or branes naturally lead to quasinormal modes. The analysis and

Fermions and the AdS/CFT correspondence: quantum phase transitions and the emergent Fermi-liquid

A central mystery in quantum condensed matter physics is the zero temperature quantum phase transition between strongly renormalized Fermi-liquids as found in heavy fermion intermetallics and

Hall conductivity from dyonic black holes

A class of strongly interacting $2+1$ dimensional conformal field theories in a transverse magnetic field can be studied using the AdS/CFT duality. We compute zero momentum hydrodynamic response

Asymptotic black hole quasinormal frequencies

We give a new derivation of the quasinormal frequencies of Schwarzschild black holes in d>=4 and Reissner-Nordstrom black holes in d=4, in the limit of infinite damping. For Schwarzschild in d>=4 we

Emergent quantum criticality, Fermi surfaces, and AdS2

Gravity solutions dual to d-dimensional field theories at finite charge density have a near-horizon region, which is AdS{sub 2}xR{sup d-1}. The scale invariance of the AdS{sub 2} region implies that

Viscosity in strongly interacting quantum field theories from black hole physics.

It is provided evidence that this value of shear viscosity to volume density of entropy may serve as a lower bound for a wide class of systems, thus suggesting that black hole horizons are dual to the most ideal fluids.
