We show that a class of background-independent models of quantum spacetime have local excitations that can be mapped to the first-generation fermions of the standard model of particle physics. These states propagate coherently as they can be shown to be noiseless subsystems of the microscopic quantum dynamics (Kribs and Markopoulou 2005 Preprint gr-qc/0510052, Markopoulou and Poulin unpublished). These are identified in terms of certain patterns of braiding of graphs, thus giving a quantum…

An overview of ideas, techniques, results and open problems of this candidate theory of quantum gravity is given, and a guide to the relevant literature is given.
Aspects of the standard model and quantum gravity from strand spacetime.
Strands are causal curves in spacetime with no distinct interior points, introduced to describe quantum nonlocality in a spacetime framework. We present a model where the standard model particles are
Quantum Gravity as a Fermi Liquid
We present a reformulation of loop quantum gravity with a cosmological constant and no matter as a Fermi-liquid theory. When the topological sector is deformed and large gauge symmetry is broken, we
Emergent Braided Matter of Quantum Geometry
We review and present a few new results of the program of emergent matter as braid excitations of quantum geometry that is represented by braided ribbon networks. These networks are a generalisation
Anyonic statistics and large horizon diffeomorphisms for loop quantum gravity black holes
We investigate the role played by large diffeomorphisms of quantum Isolated Horizons for the statistics of LQG Black Holes by means of their relation to the braid group. To this aim the symmetries of
Generic predictions of quantum theories of gravity
I discuss generic consequences (sometimes called “soft predictions”) of a class of background independent quantum theories of spacetime called causal spin network theories. These are theories whose
Braids as a representation space of SU(5)
The standard model of particle physics provides very accurate predictions of phenomena occurring at the sub-atomic level, but the reason for the choice of symmetry group and the large number of
The Statistical Fingerprints of Quantum Gravity
In this thesis some equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical methods are implied on two different versions of non-perturbative quantum gravity. Firstly, we report a novel statistical mechanics in
Self-dual formulation of gravity in topological M-theory
Inspired by the low wave-length limit of topological M-theory, which re-constructs the theory of $3+1$D gravity in the self-dual variables' formulation, and by the realization that in Loop Quantum
Quantum Gravity: Motivations and Alternatives
The mutual conceptual incompatibility between General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics / Quantum Field Theory is generally seen as the most essential motivation for the development of a theory of

Quantum gravity with a positive cosmological constant
A quantum theory of gravity is described in the case of a positive cosmological constant in 3 + 1 dimensions. Both old and new results are described, which support the case that loop quantum gravity

Quantum geometry with intrinsic local causality
The space of states and operators for a large class of background independent theories of quantum spacetime dynamics is defined. The SU(2) spin networks of quantum general relativity are replaced by
Non-perturbative 3d Lorentzian quantum gravity
TLDR
The phase structure of the Wick-rotated path integral in three dimensions with the aid of computer simulations is investigated, finding a whole range of the gravitational coupling constant k{sub 0} for which the functional integral is dominated by nondegenerate three-dimensional space-times.
Knot theory and quantum gravity.
A new represenatation for quantum general relativity is described, which is defined in terms of functionals of sets of loops in three-space. In this representation exact solutions of the quantum
The geometry of quantum spin networks
The discrete picture of geometry arising from the loop representation of quantum gravity can be extended by a quantum deformation of the observable algebra. Operators for area and volume are extended
Recent Developments in Gauge Theories
Almost all theories of fundamental interactions are nowadays based on the gauge concept. Starting with the historical example of quantum electrodynamics, we have been led to the successful unified
