A model of a ladder of Josephson junctions in a magnetic field is considered. The topological features of the zero-temperature phase diagram, as a function of charging energy and small deviations from commensurability of the vortex lattice, are strongly dependent on the field. In addition to superconductor-insulator transitions, commensurate-incommensurate transitions and depinning by quantum fluctuations of the vortex lattice are also possible. The critical behavior of the superconductor…

Two-dimensional arrays of very-small-capacitance Josephson junctions show a transition from superconducting to insulating behavior when the ratio of charging energy to Josephson-coupling energy exceeds the value 1, and this shape is predicted to arise from macroscopic quantum coherent effects including Bloch oscillations.

It is found that, unlike the previous studied case of equal interchain and intrachain coupling constants, the Ising-like excitations of the quantum model decouple for large interchain coupling, giving rise to pure Ising model critical behavior for the chirality order parameter and a superconductor-insulator transition in the universality class of the two-dimensional classical $\mathrm{XY}$ model.
