PURPOSE The molecular genetic study of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) requires high quality nucleic acids from BPH tissue. It has been generally assumed, but not experimentally proven, that the diathermy used in trans-urethral resection of the prostate (TURP) damages nucleic acids.
