Peripheral somatosensory nerves are the receiving arm for the transmission of information from the environment and from the interior milieu of the organism. These afferent nerve fibers identify stimuli and events as innocuous under most conditions of sensory perception and as noxious when events reach the level of tissue injury, whether due to trauma or disease.
