To achieve ILDG’s aim of sharing gauge field configurations world-wide a standardised description of configurations is mandatory. XML (EXtensible Markup Language) is the language of choice for metadata since it is designed to describe data. These metadata documents will be both human readable, since XML is verbose, and easy to parse by computers.
