Abstract Cytotoxic effects of ethanol on cultured human hepatocytes and fibroblasts differed with the type of culture medium used. When cytotoxic effects of ethanol were compared between culture systems using either RPMI-1640 or Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM), the cytotoxicity was more prominent with the former medium than with the latter. A reduction of the cytotoxic effects appeared to be due to the pyruvate contained in DMEM. The protective effect of pyruvate against ethanol…

It was revealed that the intracellular content of pyruvate did not increase as a result of addition of L-alanine, consistent with the hypothesis that L- Alanine metabolism is important for hepatoprotection, but pyruVate cannot be used as a substitute for L-Alanine.

Inhibition of the growth of transformed and neoplastic cells by the dipeptide carnosine.
- BiologyBritish Journal of Cancer
- 1996
Mixtures of normal MRC-5 fibroblasts and HeLa cells are used to demonstrate that 20 mM carnosine can selectively eliminate the tumour cells, and it is proposed that it depletes certain glycolysis intermediates.

Among five human hepatoma cell lines, only HLE cells showed enhanced colony formation due to methanol, and Methanol itself, however, did not enhance the cell proliferation.
