The pyrrolizidine alkaloid content of crude borage oil and borage oil from different processing stages was determined by GC-MS. The results showed that no pyrrolizidine alkaloids were present above a detection limit of 20 ppb. The reduction factors for pyrrolizidine alkaloids at various stages in the oil refining process were determined by means of spiking experiments using the commercially available pyrrolizidine alkaloid crotaline. It was shown that the pyrrolizidine content in crude borage… Expand
Methods for Analysis of Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids 32
TLDR
Analytical methods are required for different purposes ‐ to detect the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, to quantify the total level of the toxins, or to measure the quantity of individual compounds. Expand

Process Development of Lappula squarrosa Oil Refinement: Monitoring of Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids in Boraginaceae Seed Oils
TLDR
An HPLC–ESI–MS/MS sum parameter method was developed to monitor the total sum of 1,2-unsaturated PA in seed oil and was further used to analyze the PA content of commercially available Boraginaceous seed oils. Expand
Sensitive determination of pyrrolizidine alkaloids in Tussilago farfara L. by field-amplified, sample-stacking, sweeping micellar electrokinetic chromatography.
TLDR
The results indicated that the developed method is feasible for the analysis of pyrrolizidine alkaloids in Tussilago farfara L with good recoveries. Expand
Development of an Efficient Extraction Method for Separating Solasodine, an Steroidal Alkaloid, From an Oily Matrix: A Comparison Between LLE and SPE

Scientific Opinion on Pyrrolizidine alkaloids in food and feed
TLDR
The Panel concluded that whilst the available data do not indicate a concern for any population subgroup, the dietary exposure estimates relate to a limited number of food groups and a possible unknown contribution from other foods cannot be discounted. Expand
