AIMS To investigate the in vitro antiviral properties of putranjivain A, isolated from the whole plant of Euphorbia jolkini Bioss (Euphorbiaceae). METHODS AND RESULTS Herpes simplex virus (HSV)-2 strain 196-infected Vero cells were used. It was shown that putranjivain A exhibited antiviral activity with an IC50 of 7.9 +/- 1.2 micro M using the XTT assay, with the IC50 value increasing with increasing multiplicity of infection. Using the plaque reduction assay, the IC50 and IC90 were 6.3 +/- 0… Expand
Orthosiphon stamineus water extracts inhibit human herpes virus 1 KOS-1 and acyclovir-resistant strains by virucidal activity and suppressing virus early infection
TLDR
Cold and hot water extracts of O. stamineus have good potential as antiviral agent against HHV-1 strain KOS-1 and more importantly against UKM-1 strains which is ACV-resistant. Expand
Excoecarianin, Isolated from Phyllanthus urinaria Linnea, Inhibits Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Infection through Inactivation of Viral Particles
TLDR
The results suggested that excoecarianin merits to be further explored as an entry inhibitor against HSV-2 and could potentially be investigated for combinatorial drug treatment with nucleoside analogues such as ACV in therapeutic management of HSv-2 infection. Expand
Ellagitannins as synergists of ACV on the replication of ACV-resistant strains of HSV 1 and 2.
TLDR
The results obtained in this study demonstrate the highly promising potential of these plant polyphenols as antiherpetic agents. Expand
ent-Epiafzelechin-(4alpha-->8)-epiafzelechin extracted from Cassia javanica inhibits herpes simplex virus type 2 replication.
TLDR
The conclusion of this study was that EEE exhibits various modes of action in suppressing HSV-2 multiplication and did not affect the viability and the proliferation of cells at antiviral concentrations. Expand
Anti-herpes simplex virus type 2 of Drymaria diandra blume medicinal plant
TLDR
The inhibitory efficacy of Drymaria diandra Blume extracts against herpes simplex virus infection as a potential anti-HSV agent is demonstrated. Expand
Melissa officinalis Extract Inhibits Attachment of Herpes Simplex Virus in vitro
TLDR
Melissa extract exhibits low toxicity, is virucidal and affects HSV-1 attachment to host cells in vitro, and the selectivity index of Melissa extract of 875 against HSV is superior to theSelectivity indices of single constituents. Expand
Antiviral Activity of Crude Hydroethanolic Extract from Schinus terebinthifolia against Herpes simplex Virus Type 1.
TLDR
The crude hydroethanolic extract inhibited all of the tested Herpes simplex virus type 1 strains in vitro and was effective in the attachment and penetration stages, and showed virucidal activity, which was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. Expand
Anti-herpes virus activities of bioactive fraction and isolated pure constituent of Mallotus peltatus: an ethnomedicine from Andaman Islands
TLDR
This study revealed that bioactive fraction A and isolated ursolic acid of M. peltatus has good anti-HSV activity, probably by inhibiting the early stage of multiplication (post-infection of 0–5 h), with SI value of 20, suggesting its potential use as anti- HSV agents. Expand
Pentacyclic triterpenes in birch bark extract inhibit early step of herpes simplex virus type 1 replication.
TLDR
Minor virucidal activity of triterpenes was observed, however both TE and tested compounds exhibited high anti-herpetic activity when viruses were pretreated with these drugs prior to infection. Expand
In vitro anti-herpetic activity of an aqueous extract from the plant Phyllanthus orbicularis.
TLDR
Investigation of in vitro antiviral activity of the Cuban-endemic plant Phyllanthus orbicularis H.B.K. against Herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 reference strains and clinical isolates with different sensitivities to acyclovir revealed that the drug acted at early stages of herpesvirus replication, possibly by producing a virucidal effect, although further inhibition of intracellular replication events could not be ruled out. Mechanism of action of the antiherpesvirus biflavone ginkgetin.
TLDR
Ginkgetin suppressed viral protein synthesis when added at various steps of HSV-1 replication and exerted strong inhibition of transcription of the immediate-early genes. Expand
Antiherpetic activity and mode of action of natural carrageenans of diverse structural types.
TLDR
The structure of 1T1 seems to be responsible for its differential behavior from 1C1 and 1C3, probably allowing a more stable binding to HSV, leading to virion inactivation. Expand
