West Nile virus (WNV) is an increasing public health concern in Europe with numerous human cases. A total of 23,029 female mosquitoes were tested for a variety of mosquito-borne flaviviruses and orthobunyaviruses supposedly endemic in Southern Transdanubia, Hungary, in the frames of a large-scale surveillance between 2011 and 2013. WNV nucleic acid was detected in a single pool containing Uranotaenia unguiculata mosquitoes. Sequence- and phylogenetic analyses for two different regions (NS5 and…
Genetic characterization of West Nile Virus strains during neuroinvasives infection outbreak in Tunisia, 2018.
The epidemic virus Tunisia-2018 was genetically close to the Mediterranean basin and Eastern Europe sequences but distinct from the Tunisia-1997 closely related to the American sequences.
Genomic characterization of West Nile virus strains derived from mosquito samples obtained during 2013 Serbian outbreak.
The data may indicate an increased risk for introduction of the neurovirulent NS3249P phenotype to the neighbouring countries of Serbia, since many different strains are co-circulating simultaneously in Europe and are evolving under various selective pressures.
First Evidence of West Nile Virus Overwintering in Mosquitoes in Germany
The finding that local overwintering of the virus in mosquitoes suggests its long-term persistence and an enduring public health issue.
Ecological preferences of the putative West Nile virus vector Uranotaenia unguiculata mosquito with description of an original larval habitat
The mosquito species Uranotaenia unguiculata has recently been described as a potential vector for a novel genetic lineage of West Nile virus (WNV), but our knowledge about the distribution and

Transboundary Animal Diseases in Sahelian Africa and Connected Regions
  • 2019
In most of the African countries where the disease is endemic, no or few human or animal cases are reported in contrast with the high prevalence of the disease and the recurrent circulation of the virus, allowing to a misdiagnosis.
Multi-Approach Investigation Regarding the West Nile Virus Situation in Hungary, 2018
Hungary has no country-wide integrated surveillance system which would enable the analysis of related conditions and provide a comprehensive epidemiological picture, and the One Health approach, involving multiple institutions and experts, should be implemented in order to fully understand ecological background factors driving the evolution of future epidemics.
Vector Potential of Mosquito Species (Diptera: Culicidae) Occurring in Central Europe
The literature overview shows that mosquito vector research on indigenous species has to be further intensified in order to prepare well-founded risk assessments of outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases of humans and animals in Central Europe.
The thermophilic mosquito species Uranotaenia unguiculata Edwards, 1913 (Diptera: Culicidae) moves north in Germany
The finding of the species in northern Germany is probably a further example of mosquito species spreading northwards as a consequence of climate warming.
Biting mosquito data from the Lake Balaton region for the surveillance of West Nile virus infection
There was not WNV activity around Lake Balaton during the 2013–2014 period, and during the same time period there were West Nile encephalitis cases found in the Eastern and Central part of the country, precisely 31 and 11 cases.

Explosive spread of a neuroinvasive lineage 2 West Nile virus in Central Europe, 2008/2009.
Differential Virulence and Pathogenesis of West Nile Viruses
The current state of knowledge on factors that trigger WNV dissemination and CNS invasion as well as on the inflammatory response and CNS damage induced by WNV are summarized.
[The mosquito-borne viruses in Europe].
The spread in non-endemic areas of vector-born diseases have highlighted the importance of surveillance systems and vector control strategies.
Mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) Surveillance for Arboviruses in an Area Endemic for West Nile (Lineage Rabensburg) and Ťahyňa Viruses in Central Europe
ABSTRACT Six viral isolates were obtained from 23,243 female mosquitoes (examined in 513 pools) belonging to 16 species and collected along the lower reaches of the Dyje River in South Moravia
Exploiting mosquito sugar feeding to detect mosquito-borne pathogens
This work reports a unique arbovirus surveillance system to detectArboviruses that exploits the process whereby mosquitoes expectorate virus in their saliva during sugar feeding, and has the potential to transform current approaches to vector-borne disease surveillance by streamlining the monitoring of pathogens in vector populations.
Comparison of Flavivirus Universal Primer Pairs and Development of a Rapid, Highly Sensitive Heminested Reverse Transcription-PCR Assay for Detection of Flaviviruses Targeted to a Conserved Region of the NS5 Gene Sequences
It was confirmed that the sequenced amplified products in the NS5 region allowed predictability of flavivirus species by dendrogram, including the New York 99 West Nile strain.
Experimental Usutu virus infection of suckling mice causes neuronal and glial cell apoptosis and demyelination
As with all flaviviruses, USUV proved to be neuropathogenic for mice and neuroinvasion occurred only in animals that were not older than 1 week at the time of inoculation, while demyelination seems to be a unique feature of USUV infection.
Mosquitoes and Their Control
The key to Female Mosquitoes, key to Male Mosquito Fourth Instar Larvae, and Identification Keys, Morphology, Ecology and Distribution of Important Vector and Nuisance Species are revealed.
