Pulse-labeling of the nucleotide pool in Entamoeba histolytica with radioactive precursors, and subsequent high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis of the radiolabeled nucleotides, indicate that E. histolytica is incapable of de novo synthesis of purine nucleotides.
