Mutacins are bactericidal substances of proteinaceous nature produced by Streptococcus mutans. Lantibiotics are antibacterial substances containing post‐translationally modified amino acids such as lanthionine. Mutacin B‐Ny266 was purified from the cell pellet of S. mutans strain Ny266 by ethanol extraction at pH 2.0 followed by reversed‐phase chromatography (Sep‐Pak® cartridge) and by HPLC on a C18 column. The mean purification factor was 3240±81 and the mean yield was 1.0±0.1%. Molecular mass… Expand
Mutacin H-29B is identical to mutacin II (J-T8)
TLDR
The results show that the amino acid sequence of Mutacin H-29B is identical to the already known mutacin II (J-T8) over the first 24 residues. Expand
Production, purification, sequencing and activity spectra of mutacins D-123.1 and F-59.1
TLDR
Mutacin F-59.1 is the first pediocin-like bacteriocins identified and characterised that is produced by Streptococcus mutans, and appears to be identical to mutacin I previously identified in different strains of S. mutans. Expand
Purification and Partial Identification of Bacteriocin ISK-1, a New Lantibiotic Produced by Pediococcus sp. ISK-1.
TLDR
The primary sequence showed significant similarity to the lcentibiotics lacticin 481 from Lactococcus lactis and variacin from Micrococcus varians, which suggests that bacteriocin ISK-1 is a novel lantibiotic belonging to a lactic in-481 type. Expand
Genetic and Biochemical Analysis of Mutacin 1140, a Lantibiotic from Streptococcus mutans
TLDR
A number of similarities are observed of mutacin 1140 to epidermin and an S. mutans lantibiotic, B-Ny266, but it appears to have significant differences in the positions of its thioether bridges. Expand

Bacteriocin lSK-l is a prot.pinaceous inhibitory substance produced by Pediococcus sp, rSK-l isolated from well-aged blukadoko (Kimura et al., lBB7a). Bacleriocin rSK-l \'\Tas purified by acidExpand
Mutacins and their Potential Use in Food Preservation
TLDR
Mutacins have potential for controlling foodborne pathogens and spoilage bacteria and pediocin-like bacteriocins are considered to be next in line if more antibacterial proteins are to be approved in the future. Expand
Streptococcus mutans strain N produces a novel low molecular mass non-lantibiotic bacteriocin.
Streptococcus mutans strain N was shown to have bacteriocin production and immunity characteristics consistent with those of Group I mutacin-producing strains of S. mutans. The bacteriocin mutacin NExpand
Macedocin, a Food-Grade Lantibiotic Produced by Streptococcus macedonicus ACA-DC 198
TLDR
Partial N-terminal sequence analysis revealed 22 amino acid residues that correspond with the amino acid sequence of the lantibiotics SA-FF22 and SA-M49, both of which were isolated from the pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes. Expand
Molecular Genetics, Genomics and Biochemistry of Mutacins
TLDR
Screening of large numbers of isolates has revealed a high polymorphism in the genes encoding mutacin-like inhibitory substances, which emphasises the diversity of antimicrobial substances produced by S. mutans. Expand
Characterization of the Antimicrobial Peptide Penisin, a Class Ia Novel Lantibiotic from Paenibacillus sp. Strain A3
TLDR
Identification and characterization of a new efficient antimicrobial peptide from a bacterial strain designated A3 that exhibited highest identity with Paenibacillus ehimensis is reported, finding the peptide to be a bacteriocin-like peptide. Expand

Isolation and biochemical characterization of a novel lantibiotic mutacin from Streptococcus mutans
TLDR
It is reported for the first time the purification and partial biochemical characterization of a lanthionine-containing mutacin peptide from S. mutants T8, a member of the oral biota, and the amino acid composition indicates the presence of lanthions and likely beta-methyllanthionine in a total of about 25 amino acids. Isolation and characterization of the lantibiotic salivaricin A and its structural gene salA from Streptococcus salivarius 20P3
TLDR
A bacteriocin-like inhibitory substance, salivaricin A, was purified from cultures of Streptococcus salivarius 20P3 and was shown by ion spray mass spectrometry to have a molecular mass of 2,315 +/- 1.1 Da, demonstrating the presence of lanthionine. Expand
Purification and properties of extracellular mutacin, a bacteriocin from Streptococcus sobrinus.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that mutacin MT6223 inhibited the growth of mutans streptococci, a candidate for use in dental caries prevention, and specific pathogen-free Fischer rats fed diet 2000 and infected with S. mutans MT8148R showed significantly fewer caries and lower plaque scores when mutac in was administered through drinking water.
