The binding and assembly of clathrin triskelions on vesicle membranes seem to be mediated by certain assembly polypeptides (Keen, J.H., Willingham, M.C., and Pastau, I.H. (1979) Cell 16, 303-312). These assembly polypeptides were further purified into two distinct complexes using hydroxylapatite chromatography.
