OBJECTIVE To ascertain characteristics of children with selective mutism. METHOD Subjects with selective mutism were evaluated by means of parent and teacher rating scales and structured diagnostic interviews. RESULTS Thirty children were evaluated. Mutism severity varied markedly in different environmental settings.
