BACKGROUND We sought to expand on preliminary findings suggesting that anabolic-androgenic steroids produce psychiatric effects in some athletes who use them. METHODS We compared 88 athletes who were using steroids with 68 nonusers, using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R to diagnose psychiatric syndromes occurring in association with steroid use (if applicable) and in the absence of steroid use. Demographic, medical, and laboratory measures were also performed. RESULTS…
Psychiatric and Medical Effects of Anabolic-Androgenic Steroid Use in Women
TLDR
Dedicated women athletes exhibit not only AAS abuse, but use of many other ergogenic drugs, sometimes associated with significant morbidity, and frequently display several psychiatric syndromes which have not previously been well described.
Psychological and Behavioral Effects of Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids
TLDR
Although prevalence of AAS dependency is difficult to determine, and there might be as many as 300,000 AAS users yearly in the United States, it appears that only a small percentage of users experience psychological dependence requiring clinical treatment.
Anabolic-androgenic Steroid use and Psychopathology in Athletes. A Systematic Review
TLDR
The use of anabolic-androgenic steroids by professional and recreational athletes is increasing worldwide, and AASs show mood destabilizing effects, with longterm use inducing depression and short-term hypomania; withdrawal/discontinuation may be accompanied by depression.
Behavioural Manifestations of Anabolic Steroid Use
TLDR
This paper reviews the published literature concerning the recognition and treatment of behavioural manifestations of AAS abuse and suggests that both acute physical and behavioural symptoms as well as long-term abstinence and recovery should be addressed.
Anabolic-androgenic steroid abuse and performance-enhancing drugs among adolescents.
Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids
TLDR
The level of evidence for treating anabolic-androgenic steroid dependence is currently based on case reports and series as well as expert opinion, and knowledge of the psychiatric, physical, and laboratory findings aids detection.
Psychological and Behavioural Effects of Endogenous Testosterone and Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids
TLDR
Investigations and case reports of athletes demonstrate an association between anabolic-androgenic steroid use and affective and psychotic syndromes and psychological dependence, and the roles of previous psychiatric history, genetic susceptibility to addictions or mental disorders, environmental and peer influences, and individual expectations remain unclear.
An Evaluation of Anabolic–Androgenic Steroid Abusers Over a Period of 1 Year: Seven Case Studies
TLDR
Cycles of AAS nonuse were associated with a greater percentage of subject-reported increased testicular size, appetite, frequency of sexual activity, and libido, and the results provide the first long-term, prospective evaluation of the effects of Aass, when these drugs are administered in a naturalistic pattern of abuse.

Psychiatric Symptoms Associated with Anabolic Steroids: A Controlled, Retrospective Study
TLDR
It is concluded that the organic affective changes associated with anabolic steroid abuse usually present as a subsyndromal depressive disorder of insufficient severity to be classified as a psychiatric disorder.
Hooked on hormones? An anabolic steroid addiction hypothesis.
TLDR
It is concluded that a proportion of anabolic steroid abusers may develop a previously unrecognized sex steroid hormone-dependence disorder and that treatment should be based on research into steroid effects on opioid and aminergic neurotransmission systems and relapse prevention.
Use of multiple drugs among adolescents who use anabolic steroids.
TLDR
In this study, adolescent users of anabolic steroids were likely to use other drugs as well, and many were sharing needles.
Neuropsychiatric effects of anabolic steroids in male normal volunteers.
TLDR
This is the first placebo-controlled prospective study demonstrating the adverse and activating mood and behavioral effects of anabolic steroids.
Psychological moods and subjectively perceived behavioral and somatic changes accompanying anabolic-androgenic steroid use
TLDR
The data suggest that while perceived or actual psychological changes may occur in anabolic-androgenic steroid users, either the effects are too subtle or the inventories used were insensitive for detecting them.
Personality, Mood, and Psychiatric Symptoms Among Anabolic Steroid Users
The relationship between use of anabolic stemids (ASS) and specific personality dimensions was assessed in 50 male bodybuilders who were current or past users compared with a sample of 25
Estimated prevalence of anabolic steroid use among male high school seniors.
TLDR
The evidence indicates that educational intervention strategies should begin as early as junior high school; the intervention should not be directed only toward those individuals who participate in school-based athletics.
High‐dose anabolic steroids in strength athletes: Effects upon hostility and aggression
TLDR
Self‐rated aggression did increase significantly in steroid users during their acknowledged on‐drug periods, and may partially explain why steroid users were significantly more hostile and aggressive at all times compared to the non‐users.

TLDR
Findings suggest that major psychiatric symptoms may be a common adverse effect of these drugs.
Effects of androgen on sexual behavior in hypogonadal men.
TLDR
It is concluded that the stimulatory effects of testosterone on sexual activity are rapid, reliable, and not due to a placebo effect and to maintain plasma testosterone and adequate sexual function within normal levels, even high doses of testosterone enanthate should be given no less frequency than once every 3 weeks.
