ExoU, a cytotoxin translocated into host cells via the type III secretion system of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, is associated with increased mortality and disease severity. We previously showed that impairment of recruited phagocytic cells allowed survival of ExoU-secreting P. aeruginosa in the lung.
