The balance of pseudomomentum is discussed and applied to simple elasticity, ideal fluids, and the mechanics of inextensible rods and sheets. A general framework is presented in which the simultaneous variation of an action with respect to position, time, and material labels yields bulk balance laws and jump conditions for momentum, energy, and pseudomomentum. The example of simple elasticity of space-filling solids is treated at length. The pseudomomentum balance in ideal fluids is shown to…

Momentum and pseudomomentum in a shallow water equation

A basic shallow water system with variable topography is analyzed from the point of view of a Lagrangian derivation of momentum, energy, and pseudomomentum balances. A two-dimensional action and

A material momentum balance law for shells and plates with application to phase transformations and adhesion

A balance law for material momentum in shells and plates is proposed. The implications of this balance law for the propagation of defects, phase transformations, and shocks are explored. The

Energy based methods applied in mechanics by using the extended Noether's formalism

Physical systems are modeled by field equations, these are coupled, partial differential equations in space and time. Field equations are often given by balance equations and constitutive equations,

Serpentine locomotion through elastic energy release

Experiments fully confirm the theoretical modelling, and it is experimentally demonstrated that the propulsive force driving serpentine motion can be directly measured on a designed apparatus in which flexible bars sweep a frictionless channel.

On Spatial and Material Covariant Balance Laws in Elasticity

This paper presents some developments related to the idea of covariance in elasticity. The geometric point of view in continuum mechanics is briefly reviewed. Building on this, regarding the

How paper folds: bending with local constraints

A variational framework is introduced to describe how a surface bends when it is subject to local constraints on its geometry. This framework is applied to describe the patterns of a folded sheet of

Whirling skirts and rotating cones

Steady, dihedrally symmetric patterns with sharp peaks may be observed on a spinning skirt, lagging behind the material flow of the fabric. These qualitative features are captured with a minimal
