Few systems have been explored in sufficient detail to link the proximate causes of polyphenism to the ecological factors that favour discontinuous, environmentally induced variation. I examined the developmental and physiological bases underlying polyphenism in southern spadefoot toad tadpoles (Scaphiopus multiplicatus).
