Human hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is identified by a new noninvasive test, proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) applied to the brain in a few minutes. Chemical changes identified by 1H MRS are elevated glutamine, decreased choline and decreased myoinositol.
