Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) permits the acquisition of the signal arising from several brain metabolites. At long echo-time (TE) 1H MRS can detect N-acetyl-aspartate containing compounds, choline containing compounds, creatine + phosphocreatine and lactate.
