The concept that parasites may utilize proteinase inhibitors to survive within the host has been with us for 100 years. Given that we now know that proteinases are involved in key areas of the host anti-parasite immune response including antigen presentation, effector cell function and tissue dissolution and remodelling, it is somewhat surprising that the proteinase inhibitors of parasite origin have not generally been the subject of intense research effort.
