Although these are exciting times to be working on the protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) family of enzymes, they are also challenging times. The detailed characterization of many of the PTPs has revealed fundamentally important roles for these enzymes in the control of cell function. Furthermore, direct links have been established between disruption of PTP function and the etiology of major diseases, including metabolic diseases and cancer.
