SINCE isolated chloroplasts incorporate radioactive amino-acids into their proteins1–3, it is widely assumed that chloroplasts can synthesize their own protein moieties. There is, however, little evidence available to show whether chloroplasts do, in fact, play an active part in the synthesis of proteins in the living leaf cell4.

Topics from this paper

Two amino-acid carriers in pea chloroplasts.
TLDR
This work supports the suggestion that the passage of amino-acids through the limiting membranes of chloroplasts is facilitated by carriers using the additional criteria of saturation and competition and shows that at least two carriers are probably involved. Expand
Kinetics and Energetics of Light-driven Chloroplast Glutamine Synthesis.
TLDR
Photosynthetic generation of ATP satisfies the light requirement of glutamine synthesis and is supported by cyclic as well as noncyclic photophosphorylation. Expand
INCORPORATION OF LABELLED AMINO ACIDS BY CHLOROPLAST RIBOSOMES.
TLDR
Isolated spinach chloroplasts are capable of incorporating 14 C-labeled amino acids, and while no cofactor requirement was demonstrable, incorporation was enhanced by light, inhibited by chloramphenicol, and unaffected by RNAase. Expand
Organelle Biosynthesis: The Chloroplast
TLDR
Knowledge of the genetic and metabolic regulatory systems involved in the differentiation of these cellular structures is crucial to the comprehension of the biochemistry of growth and differentiation of the cells of higher organisms. Expand
Effect of Light on the Incorporation of Serine into the Carbohydrates of Chloroplasts and Nonchloroplast Fractions of Tobacco Leaves.
TLDR
The present conmmunication deals with the incorl)oration of early labeled *amino acids into leaf protein when leaves are fed C140, and the effect of light and dark, on the penetration of serine into chloroplasts, andThe metabolism of Serine fed to leaves. Expand
FORMATION AND FUNCTION OF SOLUBLE PROTEINS IN GHLOROPLASTS
TLDR
The localization of proteins in chloroplasts will be dealt with in some detail and adequate methods for the identification and identification of these rote ins from the bulk of the non-plastid proteins are especially in~portant. Expand

TLDR
The amino acid-incorporating activity of isolated chloroplasts decreased sharply with age of leaf, and Amino acids were incorporated into both soluble and paniculate chloroplast protein. Expand
DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID-DEPENDENT INCORPORATION OF AMINO ACIDS INTO THE PROTEINS OF CHLOROPLASTS ISOLATED FROM ANUCLEATE ACETABULARIA FRAGMENTS.
TLDR
It is concluded that, at this time, the synthesis of chloroplast proteins is dependent on chloroplastic deoxyribonucleic acid. Expand
Changes in the Subcellular Distribution of Free Amino Acids in Relation to Light Conditions in Cells of Chara corallina
TLDR
Subcellular concentrations of free amino acids in internodal cells of a Characeae, Chara corallina were measured in the dark and in the light using an intracellular perfusion technique and on the basis of microscopic observations the gel layer appeared to be occupied predominantly by a layer of chloroplasts while the sol endosperm was free from chloroplast. Expand
Identification of an Escherichia coli S1-like protein in the spinach chloroplast ribosome
TLDR
The chloroplastic ribosomal protein which has epitopes common to antigenic determinants of the E. coli protein S1 was identified as being protein S2/S3 and inhibition experiments have demonstrated its specificity. Expand

Preliminary experiments indicated that a correlation exists between uptake of the labeled amino acid into protein and oxidative phosphorylation and a synergistic action of two fractions is necessary in order that the label be incorporated. Expand
