The effect of diphenyl diselenide, (PhSe)2, administration on 2-nitropropane (2-NP)-induced hepatic damage was examined in male rats. Rats were pre-treated with a single dose of diphenyl diselenide (10, 50 or 100 micromol/kg). Afterward, they received only one dose of 2-NP (100 mg/kg body weight dissolved in olive oil). The parameters that indicate tissue damage such as plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alpha-fetoprotein… Expand
Acute liver damage induced by 2-nitropropane in rats: effect of diphenyl diselenide on antioxidant defenses.
TLDR
This study points out the involvement of CAT activity in 2-NP-induced acute liver damage and suggests that the post-treatment with diphenyl diselenide was effective in restoring the hepatic damage induced by 2- NP. Expand
Reduction of Acute Hepatic Damage Induced by Acetaminophen after Treatment with Diphenyl Diselenide in Mice
TLDR
The results of this study show that (PhSe)2 is a promising therapeutic option for the treatment of acute hepatic failure. Expand
Oral administration of diphenyl diselenide potentiates hepatotoxicity induced by carbon tetrachloride in rats
TLDR
This study clearly indicates that (PhSe)2 potentiated acute hepatic damage induced by CCl4, and demonstrated a potentiation of TBARS levels and a consequent depletion of important antioxidant defenses including catalase and ascorbic acid. Expand
Studies on preventive effects of diphenyl diselenide on acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in rats.
TLDR
The protective effect of diphenyl diselenide (PhSe)₂ against hepatotoxicity caused by AA exposure in rats was demonstrated and significantly attenuated AA-induced hepatic histopathological alterations. Expand
Oral administration of diphenyl diselenide protects against cadmium-induced liver damage in rats.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that co-treatment with (PhSe)(2) ameliorated hepatotoxicity and cellular damage in rat liver after sub-chronic exposure with CdCl(2). Expand
Diphenyl diselenide reverses gastric lesions in rats: Involvement of oxidative stress.
TLDR
The present data reveal that diphenyl diselenide, administered by oral route, possesses an antiulcer effect by modulating antioxidant mechanisms. Expand
Hepatoprotective effect of bis(4‐methylbenzoyl) diselenide against CCl4‐induced oxidative damage in mice
TLDR
The results demonstrated the hepatoprotective effects of BMD in the mouse liver, possibly by modulating the antioxidant status, and protected against increases in thiobarbituric reactive species and decreasing non‐protein thiols and ascorbic acid levels in liver of mice. Expand
Involvement of non-enzymatic antioxidant defenses in the protective effect of diphenyl diselenide on testicular damage induced by cadmium in mice.
TLDR
Ascorbic acid and NPSH, non-enzymatic antioxidant defenses, are involved in the protective effect of (PhSe)(2) against testicular damage caused by CdCl(2) in mice. Expand
Diphenyl diselenide protects against glycerol‐induced renal damage in rats
TLDR
It is demonstrated that (PhSe)2 was effective in protecting against acute renal failure induced by glycerol and protected against the inhibition in δ‐ALA‐D, CAT and GPx activities and the reduction in ascorbic acid levels induced in kidneys of rats. Expand
Effect of diselenide administration in thioacetamide-induced acute neurological and hepatic failure in mice
TLDR
The results showed that diphenyl diselenide is a promising therapeutic option for the treatment of AHF and hepatic encephalopathy as mice returned to normal conditions after the damage. Expand

Acute effects of 2-nitropropane on rat liver and brain.
TLDR
2-NP caused an increase of acetylcholine esterase activity in the brain and this effect was also detected in synaptosomes isolated from exposed rats, which suggest peroxidative damage in the cells. Expand
DNA fragmentation by 2-nitropropane in rat tissues, and effects of the modulation of biotransformation processes.
TLDR
Both administration of GSH and GSH depletion did not result in clearcut modifications of the genotoxic effect of 2-NP for the liver, and DNA fragmentation was absent in lung, kidney, bone marrow and brain of rats given 8 mmol/kg. Expand

Protective role of aryl and alkyl diselenides on lipid peroxidation.
TLDR
It is demonstrated that alkyl and aryl diselenide protection against lipid peroxidation was different in mice and rats and the compounds tested acted more as antioxidants in the brains of mice than in the minds of rats. Expand

Involvement of different pathways in the genotoxicity of nitropropanes in cultured mammalian cells.
TLDR
There are different pathways in mammalian cells by which nitropropanes can be converted to genotoxic products, and this pathway appears to depend on the presence of liver-specific, dexamethasone-inducible, cytochrome P450 forms. Expand

TLDR
These findings are consistent with a mechanism of hepatocarcinogenicity of 2-NP based on damage to nucleic acids from the intracellular generation of reactive forms of oxygen and/or the 2- NP free radical. Expand
