The view that the two isoforms of prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase (cyclooxygenase), PGHS-1 and PGHS-2, mediate physiologic and inflammatory processes, respectively, implies separate pathways of arachidonic acid metabolism with different benefits to the host.
