A gauge-invariant treatment of the monopole (l = 0) and dipole (l = 1) modes in linear perturbations of the Schwarzschild background spacetime is proposed. Through this gauge-invariant treatment, we derived the solutions to the linearized Einstein equation for these modes with a generic matter field. In the vacuum case, these solutions include the Kerr parameter perturbations in the l = 1 odd modes and the additional mass parameter perturbations of the Schwarzschild mass in the l = 0 even modes…

Backreaction of mass and angular momentum accretion on black holes: General formulation of metric perturbations and application to the Blandford–Znajek process

We study the metric backreaction of mass and angular momentum accretion on black holes. We first develop the formalism of monopole and dipole linear gravitational perturbations around Schwarzschild

Stability of a Schwarzschild singularity

It is shown that a Schwarzschild singularity, spherically symmetrical and endowed with mass, will undergo small vibrations about the spherical form and will therefore remain stable if subjected to a

A definition of perturbations of space-times in general relativity is proposed. The definition leads in a natural way to a concept of gauge invariance, and to an extension of a lemma of Sachs (1964).

Conformally invariant orthogonal decomposition of symmetric tensors on Riemannian manifolds and the initial‐value problem of general relativity

It is shown that an arbitrary symmetric tensor ψab (or ψab) of any weight can be covariantly decomposed on a Riemannian manifold (M,g) into a unique sum of transverse‐traceless, longitudinal, and
