I N 1953 the Hematology Study Section of the National Institutes of Health requested the Division of Medical Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences National Research Council to explore the possibility of establishing a hemoglobin standard for general use throughout the country. In response to this request, the Division in 1954 organized an Ad Hoc Panel for the Establishment of a Hemoglobin Standard under its Subcommittee on Blood and Rebated Problems.
