A proportionate mortality study of a cohort of golf course superintendents was conducted using death certificates for 686 deceased members of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America who died from 1970 to 1992. White males were included in the study population from all 50 states. The study objective was to compare mortality from this cohort to the general U.S. white male population. The proportionate mortality ratio (PMR) for all types of cancer was 136 (CI: 121, 152). Significant…
Mortality study of pesticide applicators and other employees of a lawn care service company.

  • Medicine
Journal of occupational and environmental medicine
  • 1997
TLDR
A retrospective cohort mortality study of 32,600 employees of a lawn care company was conducted, and the NHL excess is consistent with several earlier studies.
Occupational exposures and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: Canadian case-control study
TLDR
An increased risk of developing NHL is associated with the following: long held occupations of faer and machinist; exposure to diesel fumes; and exposure to ionizing radiation (radium).
Non-Hodgkin ’ s Lymphoma and Specific Pesticide ExPosures in Men : Cross-Canada Study of Pesticides and HealthI
TLDR
The objective in the study was to investigate the putative associations of specific pesticides with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and found that among major chemical classes of herbicides, the risk of NHL was statistically significantly increased by exposure to phenoxyherbicides.
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and specific pesticide exposures in men: cross-Canada study of pesticides and health.

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology
  • 2001
TLDR
It is concluded that NHL was associated with specific pesticides after adjustment for other independent predictors, and among major chemical classes of herbicides, the risk of NHL was statistically significantly increased by exposure to phenoxyherbicides.
Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Specific Pesticide Exposures in Men
TLDR
It is concluded that NHL was associated with specific pesticides after adjustment for other independent predictors, and among major chemical classes of herbicides, the risk of NHL was statistically significantly increased by exposure to phenoxyherbicides.
Cancer risk among male farmers: a multi-site case-control study.
TLDR
A hospital-based case-control study was conducted in five Italian rural areas to examine the association between cancer and farming among male agricultural workers, and increased risks of cancer associated with agricultural work were found.
Occupation related pesticide exposure and cancer of the prostate: a meta-analysis
TLDR
Although the underlying data do not identify pesticide exposure as an independent cause for prostate cancer, the fact that an increased meta-rate ratio is obtained points to occupational exposure to pesticides as a possible factor.
Risk for prostate cancer by occupation and industry: a 24-state death certificate study.
TLDR
The overall results suggest that the effects of higher SES cannot be ruled out in associations between occupational factors and the risk of prostate cancer, and some low socioeconomic status (SES) occupations showed risk of excess prostate cancer.
Agricultural pesticide use and risk of glioma in Nebraska, United States
TLDR
The authors found significant associations between some specific agricultural pesticide exposures and the risk of glioma among male farmers but not among female farmers in Nebraska; however, most of the positive associations were limited to proxy respondents.
Insect Repellents, Phenoxyherbicide Exposure, and Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma
TLDR
The etiologic complexity of NHL was demonstrated as a hypothetical explanation of contradictory results in studies of phenoxyherbicides and NHL, that the exposure of rubber gloves recommended for use by farmers when mixing or applying pesticides simultaneously to 2,4-D, DEET, N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide, and ultraviolet rays increased their permeability.

Patterns of mortality among plumbers and pipefitters.
TLDR
A proportionate mortality ratio study of 7,121 members and retirees of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters in California who died in 1960-79 revealed decreasing emphysema risk, suggesting previous reduction of a risk factor for this disease.

Cancer mortality in Iowa farmers, 1971-78.

Journal of the National Cancer Institute
  • 1981
TLDR
Age-adjusted cancer mortality rates from 1971 to 1978 for male farmers and nonfarmers were computed from Iowa death certificate information because of the limited number of nonwhite farmers in Iowa and because of incomplete occupational information available on females.
Mortality study of Canadian male farm operators: non-Hodgkin's lymphoma mortality and agricultural practices in Saskatchewan.
TLDR
A cohort study of the mortality experience (1971-1985) of male Saskatchewan farmers has been conducted, and significant dose-response relationships were noted between risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and acres sprayed in 1970 with herbicides, as well as with dollars spent on fuel and oil for farm purposes in 1970.
A death-certificate case-control study of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and occupation in men in North Carolina.
TLDR
A death certificate-based case-control study was performed to investigate associations between occupation and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in North Carolina, and a statistically significant linear relationship was noted in whites, with risk increasing from lower social class to upper social class.
A case-control study of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
TLDR
Although an overall excess of physical trauma associated with unconsciousness was observed in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients, the effect was inversely associated with duration of the unconscious episodes, suggesting an effect of recall bias.
Cancer and other causes of death among male and female farmers from twenty-three states.
TLDR
Regional patterns were evident, particularly among white men, and significant excesses for accidents, vascular lesions of the central nervous system (CNS), and cancers of the prostate tended to occur in most geographic regions.
Mortality patterns among workers in three Texas oil refineries.
TLDR
Findings suggest that oil refinery workers may have elevated risks of these cancers and indicate that more definitive studies are necessary.
Mortality among forest and soil conservationists.
TLDR
In case-control analyses, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and colon cancer demonstrated a statistically significant linear trend with duration of employment as either a forest or soil conservationist, which suggests an occupational etiology for both diseases.
A case-control study ofmotorneurone disease: its relation toheritability, andoccupational exposures, particularly tosolvents
TLDR
Heritability withregard to a neurodegenerative disease orthyroid disease seemed to predispose to a risk of developing MND, and the highest OR was found when the combination of suchheritability, exposure to solvents, and malesex was found.
