Prophylaxis of tuberculosis after gastrectomy

Abstract

I N 1959, tile US P u b l i c H e a h h Service a n d the N a t i o n a l T u b e r c u l o s i s Assoc ia t ion sponsored a m e e t i n g at the A r d e n H o u s e which led to a r e p o r t s ta t ing tha t tubercu los i s cou ld be e r a d i c a t e d and tha t c h e m o t h e r a p y was the tool. I t was p o i n t e d ou t tha t as tubercu los i s became less common , ou r a t t e n t i o n shou ld be c o n c e n t r a t e d on those i n d i v i d u a l s who were at g r e a t e r r i sk of d e v e l o p i n g the disease t h a n the gene ra l p o p u l a t i o n . As a resu l t of c l in ica l a n d e p i d e m i o l o g i c a l s tudies, ce r ta in ca tegor ies of p e o p l e were f o u n d to be at g rea te r risk. Pa r t of such a h igh r isk g r o u p is the p a t i e n t who reacts to 5 T U of PPD wi th a r e a c t i o n of 10 m m or more a n d who has had a gas t r ec tomy of any extent . ~ T h e ex tens ive I son iaz id p r o p h y l a x i s t r ials c o n d u c t e d by the US Pub l i c H e a l t h Service show a cons is ten t r e d u c t i o n of m o r b i d i t y in the t r ea ted groups; " i t seems r ea sonab l e to expec t tha t c h e m o l ) r o p h y l a x i s can r educe fu tu re m o r b i d i t y f rom tubercu los i s in h igh r isk g roups by some 50 to 75 percent .
